THE YEAR'S BEST CLASSICAL RELEASE...perhaps the most opulent book-and-CD set ever published. The performances are exceptional in themselves, quite apart from the project's historic worth. This is an absolute must for fiddle fanciers, while more general music lovers will learn as they listen.~JOHN VON RHEIN, Chicago Tribune. It's hard to imagine that the case for Stradivari and Guarneri could be more powerfully stated in words, pictures, or recorded sound-or to imagine that any future book about violins will not be judged by this epoch-defining standard.~FANFARE. Handsome color illustrations of each instrument with histories. State-of-the-art recordings engineered by Mark Levinson in cooperation with Eric Wen of Biddulph Recordings. Fifteen classic works from Bach to Martinon¤ each played on a Stradivari then on a Guarneri del Gesù and then a solo excerpt from the Sibelius Concerto performed on all thirty violins. Compare, contrast and enjoy the tonal and visual characteristics of each violin! 1 book, 3 cd's.

A Living Legacy: Historic Stringed Instruments at the Juilliard School

By: Lisa Robinson Created on the occasion of the Juilliard School’s 100th anniversary in 2005, this book offers an unprecedented look at Juilliard’s historic stringed instrument collection. The collection, assembled over the course of the last century through generous gifts of instruments and funds to the school, is vividly represented by photographic and narrative accounts of 25 instruments (and three bows) of particular historic interest by such illustrious makers as Amati, Bergonzi, Guadagnini, Guarneri, Stradivari, and others, as well as reproductions of historic documents and an annotated list of other instruments and bows. Among the featured instruments are a Stradivarius violin that once belonged to a Russian czar and was later owned by Avery Fisher, a Guarneri del Gesù violin played by a member of the Viennese quartet that premiered many of Beethoven’s and Schubert’s works in that genre, and a Stradivarius cello previously owned by Hugo Becker, head of the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. Short essays sketch the history of Juilliard and its illustrious string department, and describe the crucial role of the Instrumental Loan Program, which allows students to borrow instruments for special performances and competitions as well as for longer-term use. The book includes a forward by renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, a Juilliard alumnus and holder of the school’s Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Chair since 1999. Bio: Lisa B. Robinson is senior writer for special projects and proposals at the Juilliard School, where she has been employed since 2000. She recently served as contributing editor for a special commemorative magazine, “Dance, Drama, Music: 100 Years of The Juilliard School,” produced by Faircount LLC. Ms. Robinson holds a B.M. in music theory and composition from the University of Maryland and a Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University. She lives with her family in East Brunswick, New Jersey. 96 pages, 9” x 12”, contains 92 photos and illustrations, hardcover

Efrem Zimbalist: A Life

By: Roy Malan. Violinist and educator Efrem Zimbalist (1890-1985) led a legendary life in music in an age of violin legends. Of the dazzling stars to emerge from the Russian School at the beginning of the 20th century, Zimbalist earned a special place. David Oistrakh compared him to Heifetz: “While Heifetz conquered by sheer brilliance, Zimbalist captivated people by appealing to profound mysteries of heart and soul.” Zimbalist was also one of the century’s great teachers, for 40 years devoting himself to the renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, serving as its director from 1941 to 1968. His was a remarkable journey, fortunately recounted in hundreds of hours of taped interviews with author and Curtis Institute student Malan, longtime concertmaster of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. Malan then waited nearly a decade after Zimbalist’s death before seeking publication, so that the story could be told in its entirety. This definitive biography of the world’s first globe-trotting virtuoso also includes a discography and a list of Zimbalist’s students. 372 pp, 65 b/w photos, 6 x 9, hardcover

Michael Rabin: America's Virtuoso Violinist

By: Anthony Feinstein. This first, authorized biography of one of the 20th century’s greatest violinists chronicles the life of Michael Rabin from his young boyhood to his premature death at the age of 35. By his teen years in the 1950s, he had already joined the ranks of violin greats and he was being compared to Heifetz, Milstein, Stern, and Francescatti. Lovingly detailed, rich in music history and drama, this biography documents the many forces that shaped Rabin’s extraordinary life and career, from his meteoric rise to his surprising decline. Feinstein charts Rabin’s many artistic successes, as well as his struggles to make the transition from wunderkind to adult virtuoso, and sheds light on the true reasons for his fall from grace, debunking the many rumors that surrounded him during that time. Feinstein also clarifies the facts relating to Rabin’s sudden death. What emerges is a unique profile of a prodigious talent and a tragic life. 350pp, 30 b/w photos, 6 x 9, hardcover

Mischa Mischakoff: Journeys of a Concertmaster

By Anne Mischakoff Heiles. Mischa Mischakoff, widely considered the world’s finest concertmaster in the mid-twentieth century and called “Toscanini’s third hand” by critics and conductors, enjoyed a seven-decade career in the first chair. This biography by his daughter, also containing many passages in his own words, describes that career in Russia, Poland, and the top orchestras of America. It highlights as well the personal traits and experiences that made Mischakoff so outstanding as a concertmaster and that sustained him through revolutions, wars, and the politics of the world of music. The memoir is enlivened by the recollections of his family and students and some hundred photographs of Mischakoff and the conductors and musicians with whom he worked. Two cadenzas written for him by Arturo Toscanini, as well as Mischakoff’s own markings for a violin solo in Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben, are published here for the first time. An accompanying CD features excerpts of Mischakoff’s playing in his divergent roles as soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and concertmaster.
